Crane Terminology

Explanations of terms frequently used in quotations and project design. Using the right terms speeds up the technical assessment.

KEY TERMS

Let's speak
the same language.

The terms below also form the basis of the information we need to prepare a quotation.
CapacityThe maximum load the system can lift; any auxiliary hook capacity is stated separately
Span (rail centres)On a bridge crane, the distance between the two rail centrelines
Arm lengthOn a jib crane, the length of the slewing horizontal arm
Lifting heightThe vertical distance between the hook's lowest and highest positions
Shaft depthThe lifting depth of a shaft crane
Duty classThe FEM / ISO class determined by frequency of use and load spectrum
Load spectrumThe distribution of loads the system will carry over its service life
Travel lengthThe total distance the crane travels along its rails
Power supplyBusbar, cable reel or festoon cable system
ControlFloor pendant, radio remote control or cab control
STANDARDS

FEM / ISO and
EN 13001.

FEM / ISO classifications are used to define utilisation and load spectrum, while standards such as EN 13001 are key references for the overall design approach. Whether a particular standard applies must be verified against the crane type, the project country, the client's specification and the relevant regulations.
